Are You Good at the Juggling Act?

I've sure got a lot of different writing projects going on right now. It's fun, but I've been juggling for a while, and I'm ready to put down a couple balls. Here's what I'm up to right now:
  • Querying Countless, my first urban fantasy novel
  • Working on the first draft of my middle grade fantasy novel (75% complete)
  • Working on the first draft of my second urban fantasy novel (15% complete)
I'm doing lots of research on the remaining agents on my query list, so I can write sparkly personalized query letters and hopefully get some bites. Two agents still have my full right now, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed on that. I have a list of 15 or so agents I'm going to query soon, and then I'm taking a break on that for a while. I have a goal to finish my middle grade fantasy on August 20th. I know that's a totally random date, but it's just because I'm off work that week, so I'll have lots of time to be able to wrap it up.

Then! I'm going to shift all my attention to my second urban fantasy. The voice for that one is so clear, it's been practically burning a whole through my brain for months now.

So, what about you guys? Do you find yourself working on multiple projects? Do you like it or not? What're you working on now?

  1. I go crazy if I try to work on multiple manuscripts. My mind just refuses to let me rest if I open it up like that. Best of luck on querying! My fingers are crossed for you! Two fulls out is a fantastic sign!

  3. I really can't do more than one project at a time. I get too discombobulated switching into different worlds/voices, etc.

  4. Sounds like you are busy, busy, busy! Best of luck as you wrap up your next project. While I shop my manuscript, I've been working on my next project as well--but it's kinda overwhelming, because my next project is the sequel to my first project, and I sort of need to get the first project published in order to write a sequel.

I feel like I should probably switch to something completely different, but this is the story I want to tell right now, you know?? This whole thing is so frustrating! ;)

  5. I've loads on my plate too - keeping myself busy. I'm querying my novel too, plotting 5 new novels and novellas - my plan is to have them all nutted out by the end of August and then jump into writing again. It's all fun though:)

Fingers crossed your full requests are successes.

  6. I've got my fingers crossed you hear good news soon, Alexia!

Right now I'm juggling promotion of the debut novel with revisions for book two. It's... not that easy. I think if I was solely able to focus on just one thing, I'd be totally fine, but both? Whew! Still striving to find that balance.

  7. I don't multi-task well. One writing project at a time for me.

  8. I am quite a multi tasker...but sometimes it kind of wears me down, then I know its time to slow down and concentrate on one task at a time.

  9. That is so great, Alexia, that you have two fulls out and soon will be wrapping up your MG. Congratulations! But you’re so right: If your second urban fantasy’s voice is strong enough it’s burning a hole through your brain, you just have to get to it.

I’m a multi-tasker in most areas of my life, but until I have one book far enough along, I have difficulty starting another, because it’s almost too much to become first one character and then the other. Now I’m OK with what I’m doing now—querying my Civil War YA, The Underground Gift; preparing and working what I can of its marketing plan; and doing research for my second book about a reverend’s wife who has no grave and no name, only a tombstone left under a church.

I wish I had your gift for working on two manuscripts at once. :)

  10. Oh good luck with those fulls!! I always have lots of stuff going on, but I can only work on one story at a time. I can put one away for a month and work on another, but my brain just can't go back and forth without getting mixed up. That's cuz I juggle work, kids, along with writing.
Anyway, sounds like you've got it all under control. Lots of luck with the queries!! :)

  11. I am and it's rough. Going forward, I'll space out my projects a bit more.

Best of luck with the fulls!

  12. Good luck with your fulls.

You sound really busy and prolific!

I'm querying my manuscript and working on the motivation to continue with my new one.
