Back from Writingcation!

Hello, writer friends! I am back from my week of staycation and intense writing (writingcation). This was my to-do list before the vacation:

- Finish the middle grade novel I was writing for my son
- Querying some more for Countless

This was what actually ended up happening:

- Finished the MG
- Procrastinated on querying and worked on the first draft of my new novel (doubled my word count! Twenty-five percent done now!)
-Became addicted to The Vampire Diaries
-Subsequently realized that I'm obsessed with vampires (though not in the creepy pretend I'm a vampire and break into people's houses to suck their blood as seen in recent media coverage way)
-Read most of Eat, Pray, Love (adore it!)
-Took a wicked long nap every single day (in my defense, I started out my vacation being quite ill, and so necessary resting led to indulgent napping)

What have you guys been up to? Do you allow wiggle room in your writing goals, or are you a stickler to the original plan?

  1. I've been trying to do a 1k1hr every day, which is writing a thousand words in an hour, but some days I slack off and other days I don't hit the goal. So I just take it as it goes and am happy with the tiny progress I make. Congrats on finishing the MG!

  2. Oh, wiggle room is always good. Glad to hear you're feeling better (I assume you are, after your nappys). Whaaa?--people really are breaking into other people's houses to suck their blood like vampires? *facepalm* :/

I've been doing a bit of line-editing for my novel. Discovered I overused the dash. A lot. :)

  3. Alexia, it's great to hear from you again, although I wish you didn't have to be sick during part of your writing staycation. Several author/bloggers have mentioned this lately; what's with that, universe?

Congratulations on the MG; I bet your son is so excited! I wouldn't call it slacking to be at 25 percent with your new novel; it sounds more like you were being wise to capture your muse before she drifted away.

I love the fact that by writing only 500 words a day you can write the first draft of an 80,000-word novel in less than half a year. If I don't reach this goat on a certain day, I just try to make it up by the end of the week. After all, most of us have full-time day jobs, so all the extra hours we put in to be authors is extra incredible IMO.

  4. Isn't it ironic: for writers a vacation gives us time to work harder than ever. I do think you accomplished a lot. Relax now.

  5. Sounds like you had an awesome writingcation. Way to go on getting your son's MG done. I know that was niggling at you. =o)

I got my kid off to college last week. This week I'm going to try to get back into the writing groove. Yesterday was so-so. Today I'll be better.

  6. Wow..you finished the MG novel. That's great, Alexia. You had a fantastic Writingcation. Don't worry about the naps, all great writers need to recharge their batteries and naps are the perfect way to do that.

  10. I can't allow wiggle room in my writing plans because then those plans unravel. Wish I could!
