My First Book Club - Gasp!

I know, right? How is it I'm just joining my first book club? Not sure exactly... I think it's that I've always just gabbed with people informally about stuff I'm reading and stuff they're reading, and left it at that.

So, it all started last week at work when I realized one of the new girls loved fantasy and Neil Gaiman as much as I do. Naturally, I introed her to the two other people in the office I knew who also read fantasy. And one of them suggested that we have lunch every month and talk about books. Eureka! Our book club was born.

Now, I like my reading to be pretty unstructured, so I made the caveat that if someone doesn't want to read the chosen book of the month, they can just pick another and be prepared to discuss it. I think I'll give most books a shot, but if I hate it, it's not getting finished. I'm way too busy to read books I'm not that into. Our first book is Daughter of Smoke and Bone, which I've been wanting to read forever and I won over at Carol Riggs' blog. What a fun serendipity that was. By the way, Carol is awesome and you should go say hi.

So here I am, in my first book club! What about you guys - am I the only virgin book clubber? If you've been in one that you liked, what worked well about it?

  2. No - I've never joined a book club. I have so many books on my iPad right now, I'll never finish.

  3. Alexia, that's great. I've never been in a book club. I think I read too fast for everyone! But I've just created/joined a Writing Group which is awesome beyond measure! D.

  4. I am the Organizer of a local stay at home mom group and we occasionally get together to read a book and discuss it after. It doesn't happen regularly and isnt' an official book club, but I guess it kind of counts...right? Otherwise, I haven't been a member of an honest to goodness book club! If your club ever reads a book that has a movie coming out, it is great fun to have your meeting to discuss the book over dinner followed by a fun evening at the movies to watch it on the big screen. Just a suggestion. We did this with Dear John, Eat.Pray.Love, and a third book that I can't remember off the top of my head. It was so fun!

  6. Sounds awesome - I've never joined a book club before, but I've been tempted by it. I just need to find enough people near me who share my fantasy tastes :)

  7. I wanted to join a book club for the longest time, and then in a span of a week, I joined two, one for young adult and one for literary fiction. So much fun!

  8. I was part of a book club as a kid . . . would get picks in the mail each month & I loved it! THen I've been at book clubs at schools where I teach, but those are teacher books. So I started a book club w/ my other mom friends who liked to read a few years ago and we'd meet once a month at Books-A-Million cafe to discuss. I tried joining one in my town with a bunch of strangers but that one wasn't as fun. I actually picked a book that everyone ended up hating (oops) and they made me feel really bad about it. But what can ya do? It was by one of my fav authors and figured it'd be great. Now I stick to discussing books in the blogosphere:) Hope you have fun!

  10. I've never joined a book club where people get together to sit and talk about books they've read. I've thought about it, but that was as far as it went. There was a blogger quite awhile back (can't remember who) that wanted to do a book club online, but don't know how that turned out.

  12. Hahaha, my comment is going to read exactly like Rachna's above me! I have never been in a book club either, but it does sound rather fantastic, especially if you get to read awesome stuff like Daughter of Smoke and Bone!
