Code Name Eleven

Hi, writer friends!! I thought I would reveal a secret I've been keeping... which is that I've been participating anonymously in DL Hammon's Write Club under the code name Eleven! I used excerpts from Martinis with the Devil, and I made it to the semi-finals before dying a noble death. So, I'm not too bummed about that, although obvs I love winning more :) But, final four is not so bad, so I'm proud of that. I got lots of great feedback from other writers, and it was an all around fun time. This week the two finalist's excerpts are up, and a panel of agents and editors are deliberating on the winner behind the scenes! The winner will be announced and unveiled next week. Pop on over if you haven't already.

In other news, I've begun querying Everdream as of last night. Wish me some serious luck!! This is the third complete book I've written and third venture into Queryland, so I'm hoping the old adage holds true.

What's up with you guys? Any secret identities to reveal? Queries? Other news? Happy December!!

Contest Winners!

Hello, writer friends!! I'm back from a relaxing weekend at the beach. Man, turning twenty-one sure feels great ; ~) Snicker.

SOOO! The winners of my contest to celebrate my Urban Fantasy newsletter are Jennifer Hillier and Deana Barnhart!! Ladies, you get a choice of either a $15.00 Amazon gift card or two urban fantasy new releases (Grave Dance by Kalayna Price and Viper Moon by Lee Roland). I'll email you shortly!

I used random.org to generate the winners of my contest. They use atmospheric noise to generate true randomness (as opposed to pseudo-random algorithms), and that just sounds really cool so I thought I'd share.

And, since atmospheric noise is on my side and you know my contest results are truly random, we can all indulge in a giggle when I share these pics from my trip (atmospheric noise apparently has a sense of humor and great coincidence):

Creep getting a tan in Florida.

Me, not getting a tan (darn Irish blood).

Random sunset pic I took that I'm pretty proud of.

Thanks to everyone who signed up for the newsletter and entered the contest! I hope everyone is enjoying their week. Stay tuned for a joint collaboration between me and Michelle Fayard!

Urban Fantasy Newsletter! And Free Stuff to Bribe You!

With July nearly upon us, and my very first issue of Raven Moon Urban Fantasy Newsletter coming out, I thought I would have a Huzzah Newsletter!/July makes me happy cuz it's my birthday month/200 followers giveaway! Well, I'm sitting at 199 followers at the moment, so hopefully someone will tip me over the scale :)

I've been hard at work planning my newsletter, and having a blast doing it. Why Raven Moon? Well, one of my cats was named Raven Moon (he was black and white), and while staring at the pic of the three ravens in my newsletter header, the obvious hit me. Plus, ravens and moons are classic Urban Fantasy, right?

So, here's a teaser of the kind of stuff that will be in each monthly issue of Raven Moon Urban Fantasy Newsletter:

•Agent, author and publisher profiles
•New releases for the month
•Giveaways and contests
•Cool book trailers
•Must-visit websites and blogs
•Industry news
•Notice of upcoming conferences
•Book reviews
•Interviews

Okay, so here are the prizes. Updated! Two winners will get these two new releases OR a $15.00 Amazon gift card.

Grave Dance and Viper Moon - New Releases 7/5/11

*I updated the prizes to offer flexibility for my writer friends who do not want the above books. 'Cause I love you guys :)

An Awesome Contest!

Over at Shelley Watters' blog, Is It Hot In Here Or Is It This Book, she's having an agent critique contest! The first stage of the contest is to post your first 250 words and other writers can blog hop around and critique each other. Then on May 31st, you submit your polished 250 on Shelley's blog, and Judith Engracia of Liza Dawson and Associates will pick one to receive a 10-page critique and maybe request more pages! I love these sorts of contests. So, here's the first page of Countless, my urban fantasy novel. Critique away!

He had found his prey at last. From across the room he took in every detail of her face, though he knew it well. The full lips, thin nose and most of all the deep green eyes. Green like a highland meadow or a piece of lustrous sea glass. His eyes traced the moon-pale curve of her calves down to her stilettos. She had raven hair this time.

One hundred and ninety-four years had passed since he’d last seen her. That time when he’d killed her had been different than the times before. He’d made it so that when she came back, she wouldn’t remember a thing. Their times together. The power they’d shared. The life they’d almost had. She’d chosen another path. Taken pity on humanity, decided she didn’t want to go through with their plan. And worse than all that, she’d fallen in love with one of them.

So now, as he watched her, he took a moment to appreciate the beauty of it. She stood here before him, completely oblivious to the fact that she was being hunted. Totally unaware that though she may look human, as he did, she was not. And this time, there would be no temporary death. He had discovered a way to end her forever. She thought of herself as a human now, so she would die like one. Permanently. He had taken her powers, her memories, her lives and her love. Over and over and over again. Now he would take the very last thing he could. Her soul.

Would I Make A Good Movie Director?

Before you answer that, the results of my 100 followers celebration giveaway! Two lucky followers have each won a $15.00 Amazon gift card! And the winners are:

B.E. Sanderson and Lisa Galek!

Ladies, send your preferred email address to alexiachamberlynn@gmail.com and I'll send you the goods.  Congrats! And thank you to everyone else who participated!

So, a few weeks ago I was on Talli's blog and she was talking about her friend Gemma Burgess, who had made a cool book trailer. Now, I'd seen a couple book trailers before and thought they ranged from super lame to mediocre. But the one for Gemma Burgess' book The Dating Detox is amazing! I can easily see why it's garnered over 25,000 views (you should check it out).

I showed my husband and we began a several day obsession, planning out the trailer for my novel, Countless. Whereas Gemma's was a humorous scene from her book acted out by professionals, mine would be pretty dramatic, and thus easy to venture into cheesiness. We have a film school at the local university to which I have some connections through work and friends, so it's possible I could get some students to help. Hubs was very sweet and googled royalty-free stock video websites which have different cool stuff like time elapse videos of different city skylines. Anyways, we had fun geeking out and planning different scenes for our "movie", even though this isn't something I'd consider doing until I'd found an agent or publisher and had their blessing.

If done right, a book trailer can be a super marketing tool. Have you guys seen any good book trailers? What are your thoughts on the subject? Would you make one for your book?

Have a good rest of the weekend!

Let's Get It Started!

Welcome to the grand revealing of the previously top-secret and greatly anticipated (right?) lineup for my 100 followers celebration!!

You have your choice of a martini or some bubbly:

But first, before I blow your minds with all the fun we’ve got planned, let’s toast to you! Because without all of you awesome peeps that stop by, we wouldn’t be having this super cool mega rad party. You guys rock!

So, without further ado, I give you the schedule:

(Do you hear the angelic voices singing in the background over the Black Eyed Peas?)

Monday, January 31st – The ever fabulous and amazing queen of the blogosphere, Jen Daiker of Unedited!

Wednesday, February 2nd – The release of her thriller Creep is swiftly approaching, and the super cool Jennifer Hillier is going to tell us all about it!

Friday, February 4th – She knocked the socks off the Amazon sales charts with her book The Hating Game. Yes, I’m talking about the delightful Talli Roland!

Wednesday, February 9th – A very special guest from the other side of the writing spectrum - publishing professional Eric from Pimp My Novel!

And! And! Prizes?

Yes, of course, writer friends. You guys are just that totally awesome. There will be two $15.00 Amazon gift cards awarded by random draw. To be entered in the contest you must a) be a follower, and b) comment on this post. The contest ends Wednesday, February 16th, and I will announce the winners that weekend!

Now, I also want to pass along the Stylish Blogger Award! This was awarded to me by Lindz of Rapturous Randomocity, a really cool blog which you should definitely check out.

I am supposed to pick 15 bloggers to pass it along to, but since this is a party and I always have a hard time choosing amongst my awesome bloggy friends, I would like to award it to all of you. The award rules are that you share 7 things about yourself. Since we’re having a party here, I’m going to list my 7 favorite things to nibble or gulp at a party:

1) A fruity cocktail
2) Cheese
3) Mini quiche
4) Spinach artichoke dip
5) Tomato tartlets
6) Mini desserts (key lime pie, petit four, etc)
7) Black bean salsa

So, I will see all of you on Monday (hopefully your hangover will be gone by then) for the start of the interview extravaganza! Have a great weekend!
