Musings...duality...multi-colored glasses

Hello, fellow writers! Weekly update on rejections and other pertinent writing business: I’ve gotten a couple new form rejections. I’ve also sent out about five new queries. Just plugging away, trying to maintain my optimism. All of your lovely and insightful comments make me feel so much better!  Also, since I got some questions about me and my MC, I've added a couple pages to the blog which I hope you'll enjoy.

My musings of late… duality. As I was updating my blogger profile a couple weeks ago, I realized that in so many things I hold opposite opinions or preferences simultaneously. For instance, two of my very favorite movies – Under the Tuscan Sun and The Matrix. One a sappy chic flick, the other an intense action film. Music, too. On any given day on the drive to work, I might listen to Vivaldi and Green Day… Natalie Merchant and Linkin Park… Madonna and Dropkick Murphys. Even how I dress is eclectic – one day I might dress a little preppy and sophisticated, another I might wear khaki cut-offs and a hippy top. Ideas are often the same. I might feel one way about something, but at the same time have a very differing opinion.

So, is this just me, or is it a writer thing? I’ve kind of wondered if writers are more prone to seeing things through multi-colored glasses because we’re open-minded, out-of-the-box storytellers. We often put ourselves in the different perspectives of our characters, so are used to seeing things in lots of different ways all at once. Does anyone else experience this, too?

  1. Alexia,

Hi. I recently started a blog and have been trying to bring runners etc.together to talk and share experiences via blogging. I came across your blog because you mentioned running as an interest. BTW, I'm also a part-time aspiring children's writer.

You've done well getting so many people to follow your blog. As a writer, I think you try to remain open minded about things. As you write, you don't know where the story will take you,but you enjoy the ride, challenges, and excitement of the chase-to develop a well written, compelling story that satisfies.

So I think it's that open-mindedness that allows you to get enjoyment from things that appear contradictory.

Anyway, that's what I think. I'm going to be starting a new blog about my writing soon. I wish you good luck with your novel.

One comment on that piece of your story. I enjoyed the piece. But I was focused on the light. Suggestion, include a distraction that causes the character hesitate and grab the books. Just an idea.

p.s. Stop by my blog if you get a chance.

    Sincerely,

    Ken

  2. I notice that I have a lot of friends in my life, who are really close to me, who are all really different. So much so that my two best friends can barely stand each other. Yet each one really does "get" me. So I definitely experience this sense of duality in a different way.

  3. I don't think it's just you. I like a wide variety of things that might not always make sense to someone outside my head. In my glove compartment right now, Taylor Swift is on top of Everclear who's next to They Might be Giants and the soundtrack to A Star is Born. My library has just about every genre (except like manga and tell-all).

Maybe it is partly because we're writers, and maybe part of it is because we know the best way to experience the world is to have wide-ranging tastes. =o)

  4. Yeah, I don't think it's just you. I know I do it as well. I think writers (all artists really) are complex creatures and that very complexity means we need a special form of expression...and so we write.

  5. I think a lot of artists are like that! Thats why we feel so connected on these blogs- because we do feel what you are feeling and are going through the same things. We can all relate to each other.

I dress in so many styles that people might think I have a personality disorder. Somedays I am so stylish with the latest trends, hair done and all like Rachel Zoe, and others I'm like Jennifer Aniston- all tank top, jeans and flip flops. It just depends on my mood for the day.

So I'd say the same goes for our writing. That's why we can think of so many ideas to write. They keep changing and moving to reflect our innerselves.

Okay, that sounded really hippy-ish and profound. I'm realy just tired ;p

  6. You are not alone, I am with you on that aspect Alexia. We do see the world through multi colored glasses.
I agree with Lynda that not just writers but all artistic types are complex creatures.

  7. I'm a very omnivorous reader and music lover too. I enjoy writing different genres too. I like being multifaceted and allowing myself to be all the different 'me's I am. Who wants to be stifled into only one mood or type?
    It isn't just you. :)
    I don't even think it's just a writer thing.

Also, I'm new here. *waves* Nice to meet you. :)

  8. I have moments where I see things differently. When I'm stressed taking a bath allows me to relax and think differently.

Out of the box, yup that's me!
