Re-Christmas

First! A quick announcement.  Since I forgot to give a final reminder to enter my giveaway for two followers to win a $15 Amazon gift card, I am giving it now.  Last chance!  Leave a comment on this post before midnight on Thursday the 17th.  I will announce the winners this weekend.  Comment now or forever hold your peace!

Also, since I'm in reminder mode, check out the SPD Luck o' the Irish Blogfest me and Colene are hosting.  Linky thing on Colene's blog!

So, a few weeks ago I ordered a few books from Amazon with a gift card from Christmas.  I got The Hunger Games, Matched, Fallen, Full Dark No Stars, Eat Pray Love, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.  So far I've read Hunger Games and Fallen, and started Full Dark No Stars and Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

The Hunger Games was pretty amazing.  Just the whole concept really floored me.  And it made me absolutely sob at one point (those of you who've read it will know which part).  Fallen was pretty good, kind of like Twilight but with angels instead of vamps.  I've kind of paused on Full Dark No Stars because (warning: you may find my next words blasphemous), I just couldn't really get into it.  I've never read Stephen King and thought I should, since he's so famous and stuff.  And I'm going to give it another try, but it seemed sort of sexist and I just really wasn't feeling it.  I'm currently reading Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and while the writing is excellent, it's slow starting.  It has a lot of backstory, which is something we're all told is a cardinal sin.  If it weren't for everything I've heard about it, I might not keep reading.

So, that's my Re-Christmas.  What are you guys reading these days?  Have you ever gotten a book by a famous author and not liked it?

Happy rest of the week!

  1. Isn't The Hunger Games amazing? I love that whole series. And I definitely cried at the same part!

  2. I saw the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo movie, and didn't care for it--so I'd never read the book. Too much violence, gross sex, etc. Yep, I've read other books by famous authors that I haven't cared for. I still haven't read Twilight, but I enjoyed the movies enough. :)

  3. Nothing better than a box o' books!

I loved FULL DARK, NO STARS, but I can imagine it would be a little, well, dark, for a first-time reader of his stuff. It kinda goes places where you're not sure you want to go, and yes, horrible things happen to women in these stories. Definitely not for the faint of heart.

  4. Right now I'm reading Roadkill by Rob Thurman (Book 6 in the Cal Leandros urban fantasy series). Out of your box, I've only read Hunger Games and loved it. I keep meaning to pick up The Girl With... but only because it has so much buzz.

The only famous author I've picked up that I just can't read is Jane Austen. I've tried, really I have, but the farthest I've made it is partway through Pride&Prejudice. Meh.

  5. For now, I'm finishing The Green Mile by Stephen King. He is a terrific writer. His stories are filled with such emotion.

I'm going to be reading Shawshank Redemption afterwards.

Surely, by now you might have. Matched was pretty great too. But those are the only ones I have read of that stack...nice haul!!

  7. Hi, Alexia. Thanks for stopping by my little blog.
The good news about Stephen King: he has written so much that there is bound to be something that you'll like. I crack up when some tell me that they would never read his work. Then I ask what they thought of "Stand By Me" or "Shawshank Redemption". I love revealing that he wrote those as well as others. My favorites include "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon", "Bag of Bones" and "The Stand". You'll find something...
Take care and have a great weekend,

    -Jimmy

  9. Have heard a lot about all the books you are reading, but I have not read any of them. Currently I am reading A Wrinkle In Time.

Many times I have read books by famous authors and just not liked them.

  11. I couldn't put down THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO, though it did start slowly. But it's worth it (even if Carol didn't care for the movie). I really want to read MATCHED, too. I'd be interested to know what you think when you get to it. :)

  12. Full Dark No Stars was a bit nasty for my tastes. King is of course unreal with his talent, but should have called it "Dark with dark to follow". I would recommend "The Door into Summer" for an excellent read.

  13. I just finished 'A Girl Like You' by Gemma Burgess and I LOVED it! Hope you're having a good weekend!

  15. His latest isn't his best. If you've never read Stephen King before this, put FULL DARK down and read Different Seasons, which has his short novellas "The Body," and "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption." The first spawned the movie Stand By Me, and the second is obvious. After that, read The Shining, and then The Stand. After that, The Dead Zone or Firestarter. And his On Writing, of course, which is now so well-esteemed as a book for writers that it's being used in high schools.
